How did TEE come about and what does the future hold?
From Dr. Leon Frazin to the next generation of clinicians pushing the boundaries of ultrasound
Dr. Frazin developed TEE as a breakthrough technology in cardiology, though its beginnings were simply placing an ultrasound probe (M-Mode) on a gastroscope. TEE then went from imaging complex structures to perioperative monitor to guiding structural heart interventions in a generation. Future innovations include development of disposable miniature probes for conscious sedation, real time integration with fluoroscopy and 3D real time imaging. In addition automated, AI driven analysis of TEE images will allow rapid diagnosis and assessment of cardiac structures for a future generation of strong young clinicians. As the in-room clinicians cardiac CRNA's including EP/cath will have a major role in utilizing transesophageal echocardiography.
